Oud Origins

Cambodian vs Indian Oud: Which Origin Is Right for Your Perfume?

A side-by-side comparison of the two most important oud origins in the world — by scent, distillation tradition, scarcity and price.

Two Schools of Oud

Cambodian and Indian oud are the two most influential oud traditions in the global market. They come from the same genus (Aquilaria) but differ enormously in scent, due to climate, species variation, infection patterns, and centuries-old distillation methods. Choosing between them is the single biggest decision an oud-based perfume brand will make.

Cambodian Oud: The "Sweet" Oud

Cambodian oud is what most modern perfume buyers think of when they hear "luxury oud". It's smoother, more wearable, and pairs beautifully with rose, saffron, vanilla and amber. Most Western luxury fragrance houses use Cambodian or Cambodian-style oud in their oud-marketed collections.

Indian Hindi Oud: The "Connoisseur's" Oud

Hindi oud is uncompromising. The 15–30 day soaking method produces deep fermented, animalic notes that traditional Arabian and Indian customers consider the truest expression of oud. It is powerful, polarising, and used in much smaller percentages in finished products.

Which Should Your Brand Choose?

  • Western luxury market: Cambodian.
  • GCC women's spray perfume: Cambodian, blended with rose and saffron.
  • Traditional Arabian attar: Hindi, neat or with minimal blending.
  • Connoisseur niche perfume: Hindi, single-origin.
  • Best of both worlds: a 70/30 Cambodian/Hindi blend for depth without overpowering.
