Why Oud Has Grades At All
Oud oil (dehn al oud) is distilled from the resinous heartwood of Aquilaria trees. Quality varies enormously based on the tree's age, the percentage and depth of resin, soaking and distillation method, and post-distillation aging. To make oud commercially navigable, the trade has settled on a loose 5-tier grading system. Knowing the difference protects you from overpaying — or under-spec'ing your perfume.
The Five Commercial Grades
| Grade | Source | Scent Profile | Price (per tola, USD) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Royal | Wild aged 30y+, hand-selected | Deep, complex, animalic, museum-grade | 500 – 2000+ |
| Super | Wild or semi-wild, first distillation | Rich, smoky, long-lasting | 200 – 500 |
| Grade A | Plantation aged 15y+, first distillation | Balanced woody-sweet | 80 – 200 |
| Grade B | Plantation, second distillation | Lighter, cleaner, less depth | 30 – 80 |
| Grade C | Co-distilled / blended grade | Commercial, suitable for blends | 10 – 30 |
What Actually Determines Grade
- Age of the tree: older trees develop richer, denser resin.
- Resin percentage: visible by the dark colour and density of the chips.
- Origin: Hindi (Indian Assam), Cambodi, Thai, Malaysian, Burmese — each has a signature character.
- Soaking duration: traditional 7–30 day soaks deepen scent (modern hydro-distillation skips this).
- Distillation cycle: first vs second pull — first is always more concentrated.
- Aging post-distillation: 6 months minimum, 2–10 years for Royal grade.
Choosing the Right Grade for Your Product

- Premium oud-forward EDP: Grade A as the heart note.
